Media Commissioning Survey
BASCA and the MU have launched their survey into the commissioning of media music. The survey is open to all media composers, and will cover all music that has been commissioned for film, television, radio, non-broadcast (e.g. sell-through DVD, corporate), or video games. Music for the theatre and library music are not included in this survey.
BASCA has long since been prohibited from ‘recommending’ fees to their members by the Office of Fair Trading, under the terms of the 1998 Competition Act. However, the results of this survey, whilst not forming a recommendation on price, should provide media writers with the tools they need to calculate their own cost price structures and establish their selling prices independently.
We want composers to have all of the relevant information to enable them to negotiate fees and equally we want commissioners to be aware of the cost of commissioning new music.
A complete list of the categories of composition for which you can enter information can be found below.
PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE ENTERING ANY OF THE SURVEYS:
- You can supply information in as many of the categories as you wish.
- You can submit details of up to three commissions within each category, however this is not compulsory – if you just wish to provide details of one commission in a particular category, that is absolutely fine.
- If a commission you wish to provide details for doesn’t obviously fall into any of these categories, please select the category that best fits the commission upon which you wish to provide information.
- In order that the statistics cannot be deliberately distorted, you will only be able to enter each category once. So if, for example, you wish to enter details of three commissions in the feature film survey, you will need to do this all at the same time – you will NOT be able to enter details of one feature film commission, then log off and return later to enter details of another feature film commission.
- However, you CAN complete the survey for feature film (for example) then come back another day to complete the television drama survey.
- Please provide commission fees exclusive of VAT.
- Please provide us only with information on any commissions raised during the two years between January 2009 and December 2010.
To contribute to this commissioning survey, please click on any of the categories below to begin. Please note that all responses to this survey will be collated and aggregated completely anonymously – neither BASCA nor the MU will have access to any information which may identify you.
