John Dankworth
We were all saddened over the weekend to hear of the death of BASCA Fellow Sir John Dankworth. As a performer, band-leader, arranger and composer John Dankworth worked tirelessly to bring jazz, often perceived as a niche area, into the mainstream often putting it on stage with more conventional classical music.
He was also a pioneer of what came to be called “world music” setting up an ‘Allmusic’ centre and music camps at his Wavendon home. Dankworth was appointed CBE in 1974 and was knighted in 2006, the first British Jazz musician to be so honoured.
He won four Ivor Novello Awards during his career, for Itinerary Of An Orchestra (1956), The Colonel’s Tune (1958), What The Dickens (1963) and Theme From The Avengers (1963).
He is survived by his wife of many years Cleo Lane and his children Alec and Jacqui, to whom BASCA send condolences.
A full obituary will appear in the June edition of The Works.
