BASCA

Each song has its own secret that's different from another; each its own life. Sometimes it has to be teased out, other times it might come fast. There are no laws about songwriting. Mark Knopfler, Ivors' winner, BASCA member

Institute to support BASCA

30 May 2012

The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance has announced that it has become an ‘Academic Supporter’ of The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, the voice for music writers.

BASCA exists to support and protect the artistic, professional, commercial and copyright interests of songwriters, lyricists and composers of all genres of music and to celebrate and encourage excellence in British music writing. Its principle aims and objectives include campaigning as a leading force in the domestic, European and international political arenas, celebrating excellence through world-class awards ceremonies (such as the Ivor Novello Awards, the British Composer Awards and the Gold Badge Awards) fostering a sense of community amongst British songwriters, lyricists and composers and encouraging the next generation of professional music writers.

The Institute will be supporting BASCA in a number of ways. Importantly, Institute students will benefit directly from this relationship too, with lectures and workshops with BASCA professionals plus access to work experience and other opportunities.

Paul Kirkham, Managing Director at the Institute, had this to say:

‘We are delighted to be joining and supporting BASCA as an ‘Academic Supporter’. BASCA is one of the leading voices in the world of songwriting and composing, and as such provides an ideal fit with the Institute as we further develop our portfolio of songwriter-related courses and qualifications.’

And Graham Jackson, Head of Membership at BASCA, commented:

“The Institute is widely recognized as one of the UK’s leading schools of modern music. As such, BASCA is very pleased to be working with them to encourage and support the next generation of professional songwriters and composers.”
