Illegal P2P Filesharing

BASCA's view on the ongoing debate.

You will be aware of the debate on proposed government legislation to deal with the problem of illegal filesharing which has received extensive media coverage of the past few weeks.

BASCA has been part of this discussion and welcomes government intervention.  We agree that Ofcom should be granted appropriate and proportionate powers to deal with this issue.

BASCA also supports, through its membership of UK Music,  the government’s proposal to grant the Secretary of State the power to introduce any technical measures deemed necessary and appropriate via secondary legislation. In the case of certain persistent offenders this could include limiting or even suspension of internet services."

BASCA's position, after much discussion and debate amongst the Board, the Executive Committees and members is that we support and welcome Government intervention and agree that Ofcom should be granted appropriate and proportionate powers to deal with this issue.
