British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors

David Ferguson

BASCA is extremely sad to announce that David Ferguson passed away on Sunday 5th July after a courageous fight against pancreatic cancer.
Passion, determination and grit were the hallmarks of his term as Chairman of BASCA from 2002 to 2008.  He put BASCA on the political map and welded the writing community into a unified body.

Today, because of David, composers and songwriters have a far better understanding of the challenges and threats we all face in a highly competitive environment.

He motivated music writers around Europe and was the architect of the European Composer and Songwriter Alliance.

Today, because of David, the views of European music writers are heard by the decision-makers in Brussels.

David dreamt up Academy Recordings and made that dream a reality.

Within the profession and throughout our industry, David was known to all and a friend to many.

It’s impossible to put into words how much he will be missed.

Our deepest sympathies go to David’s son, Sam and to Silvina whom David married in February this year.

David was awarded BASCA’s highest honour, the Fellowship, at the IVORs in May – his name is recorded in the history books and will remain in all our memories for a long time to come.
