BASCA's second Professional Development Module of 2012

1 March 2012

BASCA is pleased to announce the 2nd session in our new Professional Business Development Programme for 2012, aimed at supporting Songwriters and Composers to exploit their own business or career development opportunities.

The first half of the first session (to be held on the evening of Tuesday 27th March in the PRS for Music boardroom) focuses on “Self-Publishing: Rights Management, Administration & Exploitation”.  For many composers working with different forms and genres, this route may be the best to take, but there is a great deal to consider!

So what are the key issues and decisions to be made from choices available? “Complete control” may sound attractive, but how can we avoid predictable problems by learning from others’ mistakes?  If there’s no music publisher involved, exactly how will global revenue streams flow through, and who still makes which deductions along the way? How best to structure your music publishing business? What are the key tasks to undertake, how much work is involved, and what resources are required? How does access to 3rd party decision-makers vary across different forms or genres? What tips, techniques or “do’s and don’ts” do we need to be aware of?

In the second half, the session looks at working with different categories of music publishing service providers, plus the issues to consider when negotiating key terms and conditions in a range of potential agreements.  When is a music publisher not a music publisher? What to look for and how to research it? What are the key clauses in music publishing contracts that require professional negotiators, and at what cost if we do (or don’t!)? All these questions and more are to be addressed by our guests. Those attending receive detailed handouts to accompany the panel discussion. Details of the full line-up of professional guest panelists will be made available shortly.

This second module consists of one intensive 3-hour session, commencing at 6.30pm and ending at 9.30pm to accommodate the commitments and lifestyles of those taking part.
