BASCA announces the final PD module of 2012

8 October 2012

BASCA is pleased to announce the final session in this year’s new Professional Business Development Programme aimed at supporting Songwriters and Composers to exploit their own business or career development opportunities The session takes place on the evening of Tuesday November 20th from 6.30pm until 9.30pm in the PRS for Music Boardroom, 6th Floor, Copyright House, 29-33 Berners Street, London W1.

The event focuses on the rapidly-evolving world of Collecting Societies; the crucial importance of collective rights management to songwriters & composers; and the practical issues to be addressed in order that income from licensed use of music finds it way back to its creators!

Musical works are licensed to be reproduced, performed, played, and made available to the public in a variety of ways across the world. Income is collected by a global network of Societies and distributed back to their members. Quite how this happens (across all revenue streams) remains a source of confusion to many. The first part of the session addresses the current issues and process involved, looking at the role and functions of PRS for Music (PRS, MCPS, the Alliance) here in the UK plus how things differ in other territories (including North America and mainland Europe).

The digital (on-line and mobile) world has radically altered the licensing landscape. Music users seek licences for multiple repertoires, rights and use across multiple territories. At UK level, the Digital Copyright Exchange has recommended creating a Copyright Hub; pan-European licences have been in place for several years; Societies are working together for the benefit of rights owners in a variety of ways; and at global level we have the development of the Global Repertoire Database. So how does all this currently impact on songwriters and composers? How exactly do royalties from digital services flow back to the creators? What do songwriters and composers need to know, understand and do?

All these questions and more are to be addressed by our panel of guest speakers. Details of the full line-up of professional guests will be made available shortly. All those attending receive detailed handouts to accompany the panel discussion.
