Biography

EDUARDO NIEBLA

“World class virtuoso” (Time Out) Spanish guitarist and composer EDUARDO NIEBLA is one of the most brilliant and emotive performers on the world circuit today, fusing “poignantly poetic…and truly fabulous” (The Scotsman) flamenco gypsy jazz with Arabic, Indian, Latin and classical influences, to create a truly “stunning” (The Sound) and “exhilarating” (Jazz Journal) musical experience “full of hot, dark, Mediterranean passion” (The Scotsman) His concerts appearances have included the Jaipur Festival India, The Cultural Heritage Centre Abu Dhabi, the Brecon International Jazz Festival, the Tbilisi International Jazz Festival, the Southbank Centre London and the Olympic Games Greece, in addition to numerous international festivals throughout Europe and the Baltic States.  He has undertaken extensive concert tours to Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East and South Africa and has received great critical acclaim:  “He gives pleasure that only a world class virtuoso at his best is capable of…he reached everyone in the packed hall…extremely impressive.” (Sakala News, Estonia) “Astonishing interplay between the principals who wed technical fluidity and virtuosity to an unashamedly secular passion.” (Q Review)

Continually seeking out new musical terrain, Niebla has collaborated with some of the top jazz, world and pop musicians today, including sitar virtuoso Nishat Khan, violinist Kala Ramnath, gypsy singer & percussionist Paban Das Baul, Adel Salameh (Palestinian oud player), Deepak Ram (bamboo flute), George Michael, Lol Coxhill and Craig David.  He has also recorded extensively, releasing 22 cds of his own stunning compositions and composing music for films, documentaries and plays, including for the BBC.  In 2007 he was commissioned to write the music for The Yorkshire Planetarium, with poetry by Ian McMillan and in the same year wrote a collection of pieces for the Ripon International Festival.

Eduardo was born in Tangiers to Andalusian parents in 1955 and is the 7th son of the 7th child, regarded in mythology as a magical son.  He grew up in Girona Spain, becoming a professional musician in 1973 and moving to London in 1978 where he has since been regarded as one of the outstanding guitarists of his generation.

“A display of supernatural talent…and a spellbinding mixture of flamenco and modern jazz, bursting with obvious passion and verve.” (The Spectator) “A fluent, fluid and captivating acoustic guitarist… technically superb…spectacular skill… lyric, profound...  Dreamlike, but not New Age, this is absorbing, uplifting and sophisticated instrumental music.” (Scotland on Sunday)
