Biography
Guy, together with long time writing partner Doug Flett, was the first UK composer to be recorded by Elvis Presley, who released three of their songs. Their first British hit was I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top by The Hollies. Cliff Richard won the European Song Contest with Power To All Our Friends, and recorded two further Fletcher/Flett songs - With The Eyes Of A Child and Sing A Song of Freedom. These were followed by a string of 12 top ten hits. Guy's songs have been covered by Ray Charles, Joe Cocker, Tom Jones, and he has even had a Billboard number one country song with Save Me sung by Louise Mandrell.
Guy was born in St Albans and trained in music from his teens. He worked as a session singer for the legendary record producer Joe Meek. Together with his writing partner Doug Flett, he went on to discover and nurture a young Argentinian singer/songwriter, who two years later was launched upon the record buying public. This protege, Chris de Burgh, is now an international star.
Guy has been one of the principal architects of the new British Academy of Composers & Songwriters. Guy served as Chairman of the Academy for it's first four years and as a founding director of British Music Rights for seven years. Now a writer director of the PRS, He was awarded an OBE in the Queen's birthday honours list 2005 for services to British Music. Always for the cause of the composer, Guy is a member of the Board of the MCPS and British Music Rights, and was recently re-elected on to the Board of the Performing Right Society.
