Biography
Philip's first formal musical training was as a chorister at Winchester Cathedral. In 1977 he formed a new-wave band (not the only person to do this). The Strips did the college, pub and club circuit and Philip was the principal songwriter. In 1980 he became a professional actor.
Early music commissions came in the form of incidental music for theatre productions, at Leeds Playhouse for THE MERCHANT OF VENICE and ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, at Harrogate Theatre for THE WINTER'S TALE and at the Tabard Theatre, London, for THE VIRGIN OF NOTTING HILL.
He wrote the music for the songs in Vince Foxall's post-punk musical RIFF RAFF RULES at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, and for a short film by Terry Johnson directed by Phil Young, ALL GOD'S CREATURES.
His first television theme tune commission was for REVOLTING WOMEN (BBC), which he co-wrote. More theme tunes followed, notably TROUBLES AND STRIFE, VALENTINE PARK and A KIND OF LIVING, all for Central TV.
More theatre music for Andrew Payne's double bill THEN WHAT?/SQUASH at The Old Red Lion, London, and a stage musical with James Compton called BYE BYE JOHNNY.
He has recently reurned to songwriting with The Random Acts of Kindness, and TRAK's recording of his song 'Not Mine' is used in the film 'Babbling Fools'.
